Chappell Roan's inspiring drinking habits
A trashy round up ft. the midwest princess, old ladies, and more.
I was gifted a food recycler and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
Until then, here’s a round up of garbage things I’ve been thinking about.
Chappell Roan sips sustainably
As a person who cannot go anywhere without my emotional support water bottle, I’m overjoyed to see the midwest princess show off her sustainability chops — at the VMAs, in a medieval hooded chain number, no less. Her water bottle doesn’t match her outfit or vibe at all, and that makes it all the more wonderful, since it shouldn’t have to.
Notice the many disposable water bottles in the cupholders around Ms. C Roan. I’d bet she very consciously made the decision to publicly sip from her reusable. She’s making impressions on culture in many other, louder ways, but her act of environmentalism speaks volumes to me. (It must be said, Chaps is not the first celeb to sport a water bottle at an awards show. Ms. Maggie Rogers donned a rhinestoned canteen back in 2019. I hope to see the trend continue.)
Old Ladies Against Under Water Garbage
Now this is how you do retirement. In this great feature from the Boston Globe, we get a look into a club aptly named Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG). The rules to join are as follows:
Members must be at least 64 years old
Members must be able to swim half a mile in under 30 minutes
Members must be able to free dive to at least eight feet of water
No men allowed (but they can run the kayaks or bake cookies)
A couple of enchanting quotes from Susan Baur, the group’s 84-year-old founder:
“Women work together differently. By the time a woman is in her late 60s, she has experienced loss. People in our group have lost breasts, homes, husbands, and wealth. They are in the age of gratitude.”
and
“There’s not one woman who’s thinking about what she’s making for dinner that night. You are totally out of your own head, immersed in the experience.”
These ladies have recovered everything from wallets to beer cans to toilets from Cape Cod’s waters. I admire their sense of purpose and plan to join them when I’m of age.
🤞Fingers crossed that green voters follow through 🤞
Talking Climate with Katharine Hayhoe recently shared this heartening stat:
40 percent of young U.S. voters across political affiliations say they will only support a candidate who prioritizes climate action.
According to new polling data from the Environmental Voter Project/Beacon Research, climate is on the ballot this year! That said, many environmentally-motivated voters sat out of the 2020 election. Our life literally depends on voting for climate action, so do make sure you’re registered to vote and make plans to pick your person come November.
Byebye!
