What’s up, what’s up? Please forgive my intense clickbait of a subject line in today’s edition of Garbage Soup, but if Kim K’s gonna sell nips against the planet then I’m going to [attempt] to use said nips to better the planet, or something. Have a wonderful weekend and see if you can find some creative ways to waste less food.
Did you catch Kimmy K’s new ad spot about nipples? The whole premise is that, since the planet is warming, we won’t be able to look cold naturally, so we should buy some nipple-bearing Skims to achieve the look
I know it’s supposed to be funny, and I never want to be a person who takes something too seriously, but I thought this was pretty crass. Not the concept of sporting hard nips — love what you love — but using climate change, which has led to insurmountable devastation and pain and human suffering — to sell faddish underwear. Heheh hahah the world is on fire.
“The Earth’s temperature is getting hotter and hotter,” Kardashian says in the campaign. “The sea levels are rising. The ice sheets are shrinking, and I’m not a scientist. But I do believe everyone can use their skill set to do their part. That’s why I’m introducing a brand new bra with a built-in nipple. So no matter how hot it is, you’ll always look cold. Some days are hard, but these nipples are harder. And unlike the icebergs, these aren’t going anywhere.”
In the caption, Kardashian notes that her company Skims will be donating “10% of sales from our SKIMS Ultimate Nipple Bra, as a one-time donation” to One Percent For The Planet, a global organization that helps brands and businesses funnel some money to environmental causes.
As the writers of
point out, this donation “is an extremely vague commitment; nearly impossible to check up on (just like the rest of her companies); and absolutely minuscule compared to her personal contribution to the problem.”The whole thing is so insincere. The donation strikes me as a lazy afterthought, clumsily strewn together by Kim’s team. Can’t you hear the conversation? Something like:
“Do you think some people are gonna be mad about our climate change jokes?”
“Probably. Let’s donate a little money to a non-profit.”
“OK! But not too much!”
There’s much to admire about Kim and, even if you disagree, you can’t deny the lady’s got influence. So why not really use those powers for good? She’s done it before. Just like I’d like to see Taylor Swift fall for a climate scientist, I’d love to see Kim open herself up to environmental advocacy. In this wish, I don’t know how she’d reconcile her professional capitalist persona with protecting the polar bears, but if anyone can figure it out, it’s her.
In less nipple-related news…
Air pollution can raise the risk of type-2 diabetes
A study found that inhaling polluted air can increase blood sugar levels. This is pretty scary but, sure, sell your bras. [The Guardian]
The Average American household wastes $900+ of food annually
As you plan out your Thanksgiving and holiday meals, maybe consider this a wittle bit. [Waste360]
Most non-dairy milk drinkers aren’t vegan
Allow this survey finding to remind you of last week’s newsletter, when we talked about the relatively easy food swaps that can benefit the planet and your own health. Making dietary choices that are more mindful of the planet is one of the most impactful ways you can lower your personal carbon footprint, and you don’t have to go vegan to participate. Cool!
When it comes to milk, at least, it appears many folks have no problem giving up the default stuff we were raised on. I wonder what plant-based milk did right to get non-veg consumers on board here, and what lessons other sustainable products can take from this win (or is it just that milk is widely accepted as a little gross?). [Vegconomist]
Europe’s first plant-based pet food is here ???
Am I a hypocrite for thinking we’ve got bigger fish to fry, or do I allow Greg and Gussie to perform a taste test? [Vegconomist]
Perhaps cigarette-style climate warnings on food could cut meat consumption
A study found that warnings of environmental or health impacts reduced choice of meals containing meat by 7-10%. I don’t know if I have an opinion on this yet, you? [The Guardian]
‘We’re the first generation to suffer from climate change, but the last generation which can do anything about it’
On November 1, Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), quoted above, was part of the first-ever congressional hearing about extreme event attribution, a relatively new type of science working to measure how climate change affects extreme weather events.
Love to see lawmakers talking about this stuff, hate to know that November 2023 was the first official time they did it, will wait to learn if anything is to come of this discussion or if it’s all just blah blah blah. [Planet Forward]
Researchers want to grow cell-based meat in outer space
I’m happy for them but I just can’t care about space right now. [Green Queen]
