LL Bean hurts.

it does! people have been boycotting them for a while, but the main republican donor (Linda Bean) actually passed away last year — who knows what that means for the company and our favorite winter boots

That is what I came here to say!!!!

Amazon: $1 million

Meta: $1 million

Google: $1 million

Microsoft: $1 million

Uber: $1 million

Toyota: $1 million

Ripple [Cryptocurrency]: $5 million

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi: $1 million

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg: $1 million

Apple CEO Tim Cook: $1 million

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman: $1 million

All of the above donated to the inauguration fund. Dole Foods, Chiquita Brands, Dean Foods, Purdue Farms, Charmin, Proctor & Gamble, Playtex, Cuisinart, Publix, Sonoco, Shell, Exxon etc, all donated to republicans and the list goes on. It is nearly impossible to not support directly or indirectly our in our daily lives. From my perspective, I think it will be more impactful to support organizations that are in alignment with my ethics.

I think that's a good perspective shift: support the orgs that align with your ethics! you're right, it's probably impossible to boycott Trump-supporting businesses entirely. But I think there is value in knowing about them and getting the conversation going. Appreciate your commont!

No Lowe’s Home Depot or Ace- any suggestions for hardware/home improvement stores?

Expand full comment

I think it'd probably be best to shop from the local hardware store when possible, but of course it's not always possible. Maybe the next step is to write to these places to voice your discontent and keep talking about it to everyone you know!

Living in small town USA, my hardware store is DEFINITELY owned by a Trump Supporter. I am trying to figure out my best strategy. Currently thinking, at least his contributions aren't a major impact compared to a place like Lowes, Home Depot, or Ace.

This is also what I’m trying to determine. But my thought is that supporting local will ultimately help my local community AND I also feel like instead of us vs. them, it’s all of us vs. the 1% 🤷🏼‍♀️ so supporting local I think is still the best move in small town USA.

We have a True Value. I’m not sure how it stacks up.

Sadly I don’t have a local. The smallest friendliest and most helpful hardware store in my community is an Ace… and they were on the list 🫤

Local is so much better. These days Lowe’s doesn’t even bother to hire people that know what they’re talking about. When you go to a local hardware store and ask if they have a kind of wood they’ll just walk you to it instead of at Lowe’s where they pull out that stupid phone just to search if they have PINE lol

This is a good reminder to me to stop using food delivery services when I can! DoorDash has done so much harm to restaurants already, and it feels like the cherry on top that they used that $ to fund dumb politics. Ugh.

Expand full comment

I had the same thought! Uber/Uber Eats is very blue, if that offers you any solace

Expand full comment

Isn’t Uber on both your list and the list someone else posted in these comments?

And the single use plastics, and cardboard. I mean, think people, think!!! And learn how to cook! It's not that hard! :)

Expand full comment

AMEN people really need to stop ordering from these apps. Why not even just call the restaurant directly and see if they deliver?? If you’re not disabled or drunk or high just go pick it up! Life shouldn’t be as gluttonous and easy as pressing two buttons and underpaying someone to deliver your microplastic soaked food

Such a good point. We need to bring back calling restaurants. It's usually cheaper too. I'm so overwhelmed by all the take out containers that go straight in the trash, too. You've given me a new story idea, so thank you :)

Expand full comment

even calling the restaurant some still outsource to doordash and similar

Life is Good?!?! I thought this was a tree-hugging, nature-loving hippie company. Oh well, maybe we should all just stop shopping retail and thrift our goods, repurchase and reuse 😍

Also boycotting Facebook, instagram, WaPo, and Amazon. Thought the last one would be tough but so far so good. Ace hardware might be tough as that’s our local hardware store

I'm working on giving up Amazon this year — almost 1 month in, it hasn't been terrible. I'm actually running a survey for people who've quit it and I'd love to hear more about your experience if you'd like to share! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfPf9kdr_Gf_dok9zOk5xKqsJloPcdrnsZardmjPfPRmae1FQ/viewform?usp=sharing

Urban outfitters is part of the Free People and Anthropologie corporation so I am guessing they also are one to boycott.

LL Bean?! 😩 We aren’t going to be able to wear their stuff while enjoying nature if it’s destroyed 🙄 Loved your side comments - as always you manage to make me laugh even when addressing such upsetting topics! Thank you for the action plan! 🙏🏻

Thank you so much, Emily! This comment means a lot

I see Lowe’s on the list but if you look under the “Politicians” tab on Goods Unite Us, it shows Kamala Harris not the other guy….?

Expand full comment

Looks like they've donated to both republican and democratic candidates, but ultimately more to republicans.

Expand full comment

I understand that, but to me the fact that they donated to Kamala and not the current fiasco makes them at least a little more palatable since options in my area are very limited. Lowe’s vs Home Depot, Amazon and Ace. But still only shopping there for necessities only.

LL Bean..... I'm like okay, screw them. They're too expensive anyway. I knew the CEO/owner was repub.... that was before I bought my Bean Boots, oh and my slippers. And Dunkin ???? And Petco? I'll check out the app. Thanks!

You can check the numbers at https://www.opensecrets.org/.

Note that total donations listed for a company are usually donations by individual employees. The more relevant donations and influence are via PACs and lobbying.

Any Koch company. They pretty much started this train to hell all those years ago.

Damn it all to hell, I don’t know why I’m even halfway surprised by Hot Wheels considering the yee-haw Merida mentality of the general monster truck fandom, but as a mom of a kid who LIVES for Gravedigger that really sucks 🥲

Expand full comment

it feels so unfair, right?! I've mostly been hot wheels sourcing on FB market place, which feels a little better? but also, it's OK.

If we can’t do Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or Amazon — how do we replace or fix any household items? Any suggestions? A list of this-not-that would be a lot more useful than just whom-to-boycott.
