Using AI for this purpose (unironically) is quite sad. It would be one thing if it’s used in clearly fake ways like the hilariously large teddy bear bush in the above photo but it’s a bit pathetic if people are using AI for realistic editing/additions to pictures.
Reminds me of this Bo quote
“I look at the young people. Y’know, and I feel like I was born in 1990 and I was sort of raised in America when it was a cult of self expression, and I was just taught, y’know, express myself and have things to say and everyone will care about them. And I think everyone was taught that, and most of us found out no-one gives a shit what we think. So we flock to performers by the thousands ‘cause we’re the few that have found an audience, and then I’m supposed to get up here and say follow your dreams - as if this is a meritocracy? It is not, okay? I had a privileged life, and I got lucky, and I’m unhappy.
They say it’s like the ‘me’ generation. It’s not. The arrogance is taught, or it was cultivated. It’s self-conscious. That’s what it is. It’s conscious of self. Social media - it’s just the market’s answer to a generation that demanded to perform so the market said, here - perform. Perform everything to each other, all the time for no reason. It’s prison - it’s horrific. It’s performer and audience melded together. What do we want more than to lie in our bed at the end of the day and just watch our life as a satisfied audience member? I know very little about anything. But what I do know is that if you can live your life without an audience, you should do it.”
Bo sounds so tortured here, but I get the gist! Living life without an audience of some kind has become harder and harder. Does us swapping ideas here fall into performance in some way? IDK, I feel trapped in prison and simultaneously compelled to create joy/fun/silliness. But I do think if the photo background sets a new "norm," we're in trouble.
If the use of these AI features leads to people buying less one time use decor I am all for it! I think you could also argue that while I’m sure many of the photos are used for sharing on social media, some families do like to keep actual prints in their home in frames, screen slideshows, and even albums. This would be a useful post-event tool to keep the idea of the joy of the event alive in the photos.
This could also lead to more innovation when it comes to party hosting. What about specialized stickers and templates to use when you are in a certain geo-location to help share the days event? Think Snapchat filters, Instagram stickers etc. I think the interaction of live elements could be a happy middle ground between entertainment “in the moment” and “doing it for the ‘gram”
HA! I'm with you on the favor front. I've seen talk about how "consumables" — aka things that get consumed, like food or crayons or art supplies in general — make for the best favors/activities/gift if you do need something tangible, and I like that concept.
Maybe in this case, though, AI could be used to send a thoughtful, digital thank you card? Just thinkin!
This poses so many interesting questions including: "What is the point of living?" Great piece.

written like a creative marketing queen. I like your proposal for a middle ground — especially the photo sharing idea!
I loathe party favors and decorations, and am firmly against birthday give aways (MORE WORK) so if AI can solve that sign a gal up.
